Jo W
So I have just cleaned a pile of cat sick from outside my office door. Not seen traditionally as the role of the curator, but nevertheless part of the Geevor experience. We have two cats on site – Basil and Scraggs, both as bad tempered as each other and Basil, especially, prone to being sick in unexpected places.
I have worked here on site for a year now. My main focus has been to co-ordinate the opening of the Hard Rock Museum. Fraught with difficulties we eventually got there! The grand opening was last Saturday. Ironically I was ill and missed it.
Part of the museum includes a new gallery where we can run a programme of temporary exhibitions. This gallery opens with an exhibition by Kurt Jackson, an internationally renowned artist who lives locally. The exhibition features work painted by Kurt underground at mines at Geevor, South Crofty (Cornwall) and Aguas Tenidas (Spain). There is also a HUGE painting painted by Kurt on the cliffs at Geevor. Alongside this runs a DVD made by Caroline Jackson which captures this painting being created. I love this exhibition, and I’m very proud of it. Must thank Tamsin Daniel.
So what now? After clearing a path to my desk, relocating minerals and other leftovers from the new display cases and generally sorting out the pile of paperwork, invoices and letters, I intend to do the following:
- Work with the wider team on a series of events for next year
- Pull together a programme of temporary exhibitions
- Think about how the current Cousin Jack exhibition can be toured locally
- Catch up with a long list of outstanding public enquiries
- Think about developing the other 22 buildings on site
- Work on the archives
- Address the documenting of the collection
So, where do I start….? Any suggestions?
